I was inspired by Shannon @ Hungry Zombie Couture after reading her posts on her favorite TnT pattern - Simplicity 4599. She has made several versions and every single one is gorgeous. I used New Look 6896, which consists of Misses pants and skirts. I'd actually purchased the pattern for the pants, but Shannon's skirt aura caused me to try the skirt. The pattern is a piece of cake and will say this is the first time I was able to add a yoke without any problems, the zipper went in effortlessly too and added a lining. The fabric is from Joann, a 100% cotton in a lovely print of bold wavy lines. A few weeks ago I totally indulged myself at Joann's since the fabrics were 40% off and purchased 10 yards of cotton fabric in increments of 2 yards each in a variety of prints.

Skirting on the Edge with New Look 6896
Here are some construction shots (I need to add hook & eye)
Here is the second skirt, more fabric from the batch I'd purchased from JoAnn in a lovely kiwi with circles outlined in brown & beige.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know:
What do you usually sew? I think I sew a little of everything. I LOVE dresses so I make a lot of those. I'm about to start on some pants and shorts.
When you shop for fabric, what size cuts do you usually buy? If I know what i'm going to make, I only get what I need. If I have no idea what it will be then I get 3 yards. A little more if its 45 wide.
Do you buy on impulse or do you go out looking for something you need? Both. If I see something pretty I'll grab it. Chances are if you like it and leave it, when you go back it won't be there. Ask me how I know lol.
Are you a pre-washer? YES!! I prewash ALL my fabric. I don't often dry it in the dryer though, UNLESS it's something that I know will shrink.
How do you sort your fabric? Right now it's kinda all just 'folded up on the shelf' but I know where everything is. I do have a shelf just for knits lol.
Do you have any special folding techniques? Nope.
Great questions!
Do you have favorite stash-busting projects?
Do you have a favorite print in your stash?
I just bought a skirt with the same shape for $89 bucks to wear to my son's upcoming graduation. Your version is so much nicer!
Cute skirts!!

Dresses

If I see some fabric I like and have no idea what I am making I get 4 yards of it.
Do you buy on impulse or do you go out looking for something you need? both
Are you a pre-washer?
yes
How do you sort your fabric?

Do you have any special folding techniques?
No!LOL
Do you have favorite stash-busting projects? No
Do you have a favorite print in your stash?Yes
Very nice skirts. I want one of each for myself. LOL!
Since I'm not actually sewing I won't bother to answer the questions. LOL!
Thank You and also for your responses.
I am wearing the 1st skirt today and paired it with a rtw cream top. Of course, I've managed to get a make-up stain smack dead in the middle of my top and will be running over to the loft to see if I can find a top to go with it. If not, I will be a mad woman for the rest of the day...lol
I saw your skirt on PR, but had to get the additional details (and skirt) from your blog. Thanks for all of the extra picks of the inside. It looks great. I really should line more of my stuff. Thanks for the inspiration.
Great Skits. I'm loving the wavy skirt.
Both skirt are super cute. As for the growing mounds of fabric..., you are not alone. lol
What I usually sew: Lately mostly dresses. But I do sew a little bit of everything: from curtains to purses to fashion apparel.
What size cut of fabric: If I know what I'm planning to make out of it, I get pants and jackets 2 1/2 yds, dress 3 1/2 yds, tops 1 1/2 yds (60" wide fab). For 45 inch wide 1 yd or so more per item. If I don't know, I usually get 4 yds.
Shop impulse or need: Both.
Pre-washer: About half and half. It depends on the fabric and how I will care for it once the garment is finished.
Sort fabric: Yes. I have a lot of it. It's the only way I can keep up with what I have.
Folding technique: No, not really. But velvet pieces are hung on a skirt hanger and placed in the closet.
No to the final to questions.
Thanks,
Cennetta
Love the skirt very cute great job
Both skirts are gorgeous!
Ms. Sheila, I reaaly love the wavy blue, brown and green fabric from Joann...I looked online for it and I cant find it...is it a quiling fabric??Thanks
@ Lynda: You are correct in that the fabric is quilting. I purchased the fabric during one of Joann's 40% of cotton sales.
Thanks, Sheila...I bought 4 yards of it today and also picked up the same fabric in the pink, green and brown colorway...More maxi dresses to follow...
I love skirts, very nice!
